Fast Discrete Orthonormal Stockwell Transform

چکیده
We present an efficient method for computing the discrete orthonormal Stockwell transform (DOST). The Stockwell transform (ST) is a time-frequency decomposition transform that is showing great promise in various applications, but is limited because its computation is infeasible for most applications. The DOST is a nonredundant version of the ST, solving many of the memory and computational issues. However, computing the DOST of a signal of length N using basis vectors is still O(N2). The computational complexity of our method is O(N logN), putting it in the same category as the FFT. The algorithm is based on a simple decomposition of the DOST matrix. We also explore the way to gain conjugate symmetry for the DOST and propose a variation of the parameters that exhibits symmetry, akin to the conjugate symmetry of the FFT of a real-valued signal. Our fast method works equally well on this symmetric DOST. In this paper, we provide a mathematical proof of our results and derive that the computational complexity of our algorithm is O(N logN). Timing tests also confirm that the new method is orders-of-magnitude faster than the brute-force DOST, and they demonstrate that our fast DOST is indeed O(N logN) in complexity.

An Analysis of Stockwell Transforms, with Applications to Image Processing
Time-frequency analysis is a powerful tool for signal analysis and processing. The Fourier transform and wavelet transforms are used extensively as is the Short-Time Fourier Transform (or Gabor transform). In 1996 the Stockwell transform was introduced to maintain the phase of the Fourier transform, while also providing the progressive resolution of the wavelet transform. The discrete orthonorm...
متن کاملSymmetric Discrete Orthonormal Stockwell Transform
The Stockwell transform (ST) is a time-frequency signal decomposition that is gaining in popularity, likely because of its direct relation with the Fourier Transform (FT). A discrete and non-redundant version of the ST, denoted the Discrete Orthonormal Stockwell Transform (DOST), has made the use of the ST more feasible. However, the matrix multiplication required by the DOST can still be a for...

متن کاملOn the use of the Stockwell transform for image compression
In this paper, we investigate the use of the Stockwell Transform for image compression. The proposed technique uses the Discrete Orthogonal Stockwell Transform (DOST), an orthogonal version of the Discrete Stockwell Transform (DST). These mathematical transforms provide a multiresolution spatial-frequency representation of a signal or image. First, we give a brief introduction for the Stockwell...

Since its appearing in 1996 [2], the Stockwell transform (S-transform) has been used as a tool in medical imaging, geophysics and signal processing in general. In this talk, we prove that the system of functions (so-called DOST basis), introduced by R. Stockwell in [3], is indeed an orthonormal basis of L2([0, 1]), which is a time-frequency localized basis, in the sense of Donoh-Stark Theorem [...
